12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas: Day 9
December 20, 2011Surprise! Ohio State’s Self-Imposed Sanctions Reportedly Increased
December 20, 2011It sounds like the Cleveland Browns are with Craig when it comes to starting a healthy Colt McCoy for the duration of the 2011 NFL season. Unfortunately, it appears that “healthy” is the operative word with the second-year quarterback still not over his concussion which was sustained almost two weeks ago.
Though McCoy was in Berea to receive treatment – an upgrade over last week where the 6-foot-1-inch Texan spent most of his days in the comfort of his own home – Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said that, at this point, it will likely be Wallace under center.
Facing the Arizona Cardinals on the road, Wallace finished his first start of the 2011 season with 243 yards passing and a touchdown to rookie wide receiver Greg Little. Unfortunately, it was an offensive mishap which led to a Wallace fumble and a subsequent game-tying field goal which would send the Browns and Cardinals to overtime where Cleveland would ultimately fall, 20-17.
There has been some speculation around Cleveland that Colt McCoy has taken his final snap as the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns. When asked if McCoy would start the season finale against the Steelers, the same team which put him in this precarious position, Shurmur responded with a very parental “we’ll see.”

Since none of us knows what McCoy’s medical status is for sure, I wouldn’t start reading too much into this. If we were able to play, I’m sure he would. So let’s not bury him yet.
Mr. Cleaveland, I disagree. I think Holmgren and Heckett are using the concussion as an excuse to back away from McCoy being starting QB. I fault them more than McCoy for this lousy season. I still cannot understand the reluctance to improve this team via free agency. If they thought this team was solid on Week 1, then they have proven to be lousy at evaluating talent.
@2
I will start by saying I like Colt McCoy. i liked him at Texas. I feel like Colt needs a chance to play with tools around him. Putting him out their with arguably the worst skill position players around him and a pathetic right side of the offensive line and expecting him to put up Franchise QB type numbers is crazy. Put Drew Brees on the Browns, does he make the Browns an AFC north contender? i think no.
*There
(Not saying I would not pick Brees over McCoy in a heartbeat, just trying to illustrate my point of the Browns lack of talent around McCoy)
I like McCoy also, and will hate to see the Browns draft a QB when we have so many other needs. I think McCoy can be a good QB with a stronger supporting cast – the kind Holmgren and Heckett have been negligent in getting him.
@Return – Yes, Drew Brees does.
All these out of nowhere receivers have something in common in their success…great QBs.
Jordy Nelson? Lance Moore? Pierre Garcon?
Colt needs to go. He can’t throw the ball further than 10-12 yards with any zip. Can’t throw the seam.
I mean, ugh…please Luck or Barkley.
@Jack
So with Drew Brees instead of Mccoy we win 13 games and beat Baltimore and Pittsburgh?
All of those WRs you listed have other WRs and playmakers around them to take pressure off of them. And Garcon is having a decent season with Painter and orlovski throwing to him, both of whom i would hope even you agree are worse than McCoy.
I cant help but wonder if McCoys credibility as a leader has taken a hit here. Im not absolving the Browns of any blame, because obviously they should have handled things better than they did. But, McCoy did tell the trainers it was a hand injury and he did ask to go back into the game.
The next day his Dad is chirping to the press about how he never should have gone back in the game, didnt remember anything, etc. Now the union is involved. Did Colt and his Dad get the union involved or did they get involved because of Brad McCoys comments to the PD? Coupled with a lack of a ringing endorsement from Shurmur “Colt is the starter if healthy” or whatever, I can see why people are speculating.
Im not stating anything as factual or even my own opinion, Im only saying that I can understand where the rumors are coming from.
McCoy may or may not be the answer, this can be debated till this time next year. I do see the Browns not drafting a QB in the early rounds and maybe trading one or both 1st rounders for more picks, they need quality players. They need speed.
Watch for one big free agent signing. A back up QB. As past Holmgren history with picking up back up QBs (Farve & Hasselbeck)repeats itself in Flynn from GB.
Yeah the Colts are terrible. They’re 1-13. If you put a great QB on that team, they don’t automatically make the playoffs.
@pepe…I hope that was sarcasm
RG3
McCoy hasn’t done a single thing better than Quinn, Anderson, Frye, etc. I simply don’t see any reason at all to keep the Browns from drafting a high quality QB. IT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION ON THE FIELD!!
Last post… 😉
I have no problem with the Browns drafting RG3 or Luck and starting Wallace next year. I’ve been a Seneca Wallace fan since he played in Seattle and I think he’d be a fine mentor for either rookie QB to sit behind.
