Could Amnesty Land Baron Davis in Miami?
November 1, 2011While We’re Waiting… Sizemore’s Options, NBPA Cracking and Blue Jacket Coverage
November 2, 2011With contract discussions between the Cleveland Browns and Peyton Hillis still ongoing, reports are now circulating that the team has offered the running back a three-year contract extension that would be worth $16.5 million, with $3 million guaranteed.
WOIO’s Tony Zarella, sports director of Cleveland’s 19 Action News, is reporting that the Browns’ offer is very similar to that of linebacker Chris Gocong, who signed a three-year extension a little over one month ago. The version offered to Hillis would pay the running back $4 million in the first year, $4.5 in the second and $5 million in the third with a signing bonus of $3 million that would be fully guaranteed.
The discussions appear to be at an impasse due to the guaranteed portion of the contract with Hillis looking for anywhere up to $10 million. The Gocong deal guarantees the linebacker roughly $8 million and appears to be the starting point for both parties with the player feeling he should be compensated more, and the team feeling the contrary.
Hillis is in the final year of his rookie contract, paying him $600,000. He rushed for nearly 1,200 yards in 2010, but has been marred by injuries through much of 2011.

How does this stack up to the competition?
Seems to me that he would need to get some time in this year and show he is not a one year wonder if he hopes to boost it up to about 5.5, 6, 6.5. with maybe 5 guaranteed.
This season still does not show us that he can have the legs at the end like he lost last year the last few games.
Pat is a Clown
well, we don’t have to worry about signing Robiskie to a big extension now 🙂

The Brian Robiskie era is over…
3 mil guaranteed is way too cheap
I wouldn’t mind cutting him tomorrow. I’m done with him.
Sounds like a fair deal, considering he can’t stay on the field these days.
I think the browns could offer a little better. But I would say start with those numbers as a base, maybe gaurantee the first year, then 3 mil on top of that, and offer incentives to increase pay based on playing time and production. Have it so he could make double (so like instead of the 5 mil have it go to 10) if he plays at a pro-bowl level (which would be better then last season mind you).
forget about this year – hillis was a top-5 RB last year. Gocong? You think anyone outside of Cleveland knows who this guy is?
Pay Hillis what he deserves. Sure, the injuries bring his value down, but he’s good. period. Do you think the Titans are gonna cut CJ now? No. and the Browns don’t want to lose hillis. i think you have to give him around 8 guaranteed.
Saggy I agree with you, I just think the browns will wait for hillis to get back on the field, and as soon as he has a 100+ rushing yards game they will pay him the 8mil guaranteed.
If (and that’s a big one) hillis never produced as he did last year again, and the browns had signed him while he was injured, I can’t imagine the drama among browns fans and media putting this signing in the pretty big closet of other Browns’ bad signings.
On the subject of hillis, why aren’t they throwing him the ball this year? That’s irked me since day one…
so glad we locked up Gocong before Hillis. Now thats the basis for negotiation? Yet another errant move.
This is the most over hyped and over rated front office in the history of cleveland sports. They talked about how “we like our receivers and think they can play” all off season long. Then 7 games into the season they cut one of their starting wr’s bc he’s inept. DUH!! Hello, every single browns fan knew this about our wr’s even dating back to two years ago and heckert has basically done nothing to change that unit.. By far the worst unit on the team since 2008 ended.
JPS Not much of a political person are ya?
This contract offer is similar to the contract that Willis McGahee signed with the Broncos at age 30, 5 years removed from a 1,000 yard season and Hillis is described as a prima donna for not getting a contract done?
He is asking for 10 million guaranteed, that isn’t that much. Brandon Jacobs got 13 million guaranteed, Jonathan Stewart isnt even a starter and got 10 million guaranteed. Before Michael Turner was even proven as an every down back he got 15 million guaranteed. Bradshaw got 9 million guaranteed and he is small, not a homerun threat (Hillis’ longest rush last year was longer than his) not to mention he coughed the ball up a similar number of times, 7 times with 8 total touchdowns, similar ypc. It was his only 1k rushing season and he had less yards from scrimmage than Hillis. NINE MILLION GUARANTEED is what he got.
Btw, McGahee got 15 million guaranteed when signing with the Ravens, he had one slightly above average season with the Bills (1100 rushing yards 4.0 ypc and not many receiving yards, a little over a 100, the next year he had 1200 rushing 3.8 ypc, the year after that 990, 3.8 ypc, during this time he had several injuries. He complained about the situation in Buffalo and he was traded, got 15 million guaranteed. He ran close to 3k in Baltimore and 31 tds. Hillis is more talented than McGahee, especially a 30 year old McGahee.
Compare McGahee to Hillis who had 1167 rushing AND 477 receiving
btw Hillis just didn’t perform great in 8 games last year, he did it in Denver, 522 yards from scrimmage 6 tds. As far as saying he only had 8 great games for last year is implying that all the other backs making more money have great games for a majority of the season. 1k = 62.5 yards per game. If every back were getting 100 yards each game then we would have 15+ backs with 1600 yards (btw Hillis had 1600 yards from scrimmage last year) and was 6th among backs.
This whole contract talk deal is a distraction to the fans, to the team and to Hillis himself. I attribute that to a big reason why when he is on the field, he hasn’t shined. Too worried about the contract. Browns front office should work hard to come to a deal and pay him. Once this cloud is gone, I think he can return to being himself as he was last year when he had nothing to lose.
