The Indians may have headed South, literally, and sucked nearly all of the top talent off their Triple-A affiliate’s roster, but despite that, the Columbus Clippers repeated as International League Champs with a 4-1 win over Lehigh Valley. Our own DP had a quick take, and here’s another recap from Tony Lastoria at IPI, along with a take on Kinston’s season coming to an end, “Lee pitched two shutout innings of relief and did not allow a baserunner while striking out four. He pitched in relief of right-handed starter Paolo Espino who was brilliant with seven strong innings where he allowed just one run on four hits, a walk, and had five strikeouts. He threw 59 of his 89 pitches for strikes and plowed through the Lehigh lineup and ended up facing just four batters over the minimum before he departed after the seventh inning.” [Indians Prospect Insider]
In less pleasing news, the inevitable occurred last night as the Detroit Tigers clinched the 2011 AL Central Division title. Big League Stew has the story with a title that made me throw up in my mouth just a little bit,. My thoughts? Get out of this team’s way. “Doug Fister, continuing his personal dominance since coming over from the Mariners in a trade, kept the A’s in check for eight innings. Jose Valverde, the Excitable Big Potato, closed for his 45th save in as many chances. Brandon Inge, a veteran infielder who was a big part of the 2006 World Series team but was sent to the minors earlier this season, handled the final out on a grounder.” [Big League Stew]
The Buckeyes have their first high-profile test of the season in the Miami Hurricanes. Johnny Ginter of Eleven Warriors has an extensive game preview, “Jacory is really the X-factor here for the Miami offense. His replacement Stephen Morris was almost serviceable against Maryland, but seriously kid, this is the Miami Hurricanes. If you’re gonna toss a couple of INTs you damn well better have a yards per attempt average better than 7, and that’s where Jacory comes in. Benjamin and underrated, oversized, speedy Allen Hurns (who had four receptions for 69 yards against Maryland), will both help Harris on his quest to go Jacrazy on the OSU secondary. Expect these guys to repeatedly challenge Howard and company both deep and early.” [Eleven Warriors]
Chris Pokorny with Dawgs by Nature tells us that Tony Pashos will likely be out for more than just Sunday’s game at Indianapolis, “When asked if Pashos had suffered any form of a setback, Shurmur said that he had not and that it just takes time for that type of injury to settle down. Hicks and Cousins better be ready, because they’ll likely be lined up against Robert Mathis the entire game. Constant disruption from that side of the line will kill what the Browns are trying to achieving in the West Coast Offense. Hopefully the Browns are able to neutralize Mathis just enough to take advantage of the rest of the Colts’ flaws on defense.” [Dawgs by Nature]
Finally, for our guy TD, Missouri fans are proposing that Kansas drop the nickname “Jayhawks”, “The town of Osceola, a small town southeast of Kansas City, wants KU to abandon the Jayhawks because of the ties to “a group of domestic terrorists.” The Osceola Board of Alderman passed the resolution Tuesday.” [Dr. Saturday]
