WFNY Roundtable: Super Bowl Edition
February 7, 2011Annual Review of the Super Bowl Halftime Show
February 7, 2011By now, I’m sure you’ve heard/read/discussed the goofy debate about the two Ohio basketball teams not named Cleveland State and their respective streaks. It’s been on the radio, been on the Twitters, been on the lips of many a story-starved Cleveland/Ohio sports fan.
The Ohio State Buckeye men’s basketball team is currently #1 in the land, and sitting at 24-0, which of course gives them a 24-game winning streak. Conversely, the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team is currently 8-43 on the year, and (in case you missed it!) is in the midst of a 24-game losing streak. It’s the magic number 24! Grady Sizemore and stuff!
Sorry, I got sidetracked. Back to the question at hand. The Buckeyes have seven more games on their regular season schedule before the Big 11 (nee, 10) tournament. Here is a look at the upcoming games for each team between now and Sunday March 6th:
OSU | Cavs |
2/7 – @Dallas | |
2/9 – vs. Detroit | |
2/11 – vs. LA Clippers | |
2/12 – @#14 Wisconsin | |
2/13 – vs. Washington | |
2/15 – vs. Michigan St. | |
2/16 – vs. LA Lakers | |
2/20 – @#12 Purdue | |
2/22 – vs. Illinois | |
2/23 – vs. Houston | |
2/25 – vs. New York | |
2/26 – vs. Indiana | |
2/27 – vs. Philadelphia | |
3/1 – @Penn State | |
3/2 – vs. San Antonio | |
3/4 – @New York | |
3/6 – vs. #14 Wisconsin | 3/6 – vs. New Orleans |
The Cavs obviously have more chances to break their streak, but they also have a lot of tough games in there. At first glance, it looks like each team has three decent chances to break/have broken their streak: for OSU, the two Wisconsin games and the Purdue game on the road. For the Cavs, home games against the Pistons, the winless-on-the-road Wizards, and Philadelphia.
As Mr. Bowers pointed out, there’s also another wrinkle to this situation: call it, the Sullinger Factor. More specifically, Bowers asked: Will those two streaks some together in a nexus involving Jared Sullinger as a Cav next season? To wit, the Cavs (most likely) will end up with the most ping pong balls in the draft lottery, and Sullinger’s draft stock continues to sky rocket between now and the draft in conjunction with OSU’s success.
So, what do you think, WFNY readers? Who blinks first, the Buckeyes or the Cavs? Whose streak goes by the boards, and when does it happen? And finally, will all of this come together with Jared Sullinger donning Wine and Gold next season?

I dont know.
I think the Cavs win first by proxy of scheduling. That Detroit game at home will be the ticket.
Also, most ping pong balls is great, but Sullinger is a third or fourth pick at this point.
The Cavs will beat the Pistons on Wednesday, tOSU will lose their next game v Wisconsin, and if Grant drafts Sullinger, we’ll break our loss streak again next season. Sorry, a slightly more skilled version of Glen Davis is NOT the answer here.
id rather have irving
has no body listened to the fact that Sully chances of returning to the buckeyes are higher then him entering the draft
@Scott – Could you please share with us who you would take ahead of Sullinger?
I realize Sullinger is not all that athletic compared with the running F/C’s of our day. But man is he strong. Reminds me a lot of a Charles Barkley type player.
Cavs better get the pick right.
Sullinger wouldn’t be a bad option (better than Percy IMO), but I would be disappointed if we chose him over Irving.
Really wish Enes was allowed to play this seasson so we could have a better visual of the comparison between him and sullinger.
Du: My top five is currently as follows:
1) Irving
2) T Jones
3) P Jones
4) Sullinger
5) D Williams
Williams is a lot closer to a 4A than 5. Don’t count out Valanciunas from Lithuainia as well.
mgbode – Is “Percy” actually “Perry?”
I have a strange feeling the Buckeyes are going to go to the Tourney perfect. If not, this is the biggest game before then in my eyes. Going to Wisconsin is going to be tough.
Cavs next chance to me is this Sunday when the Wiz comes to the Q. Since they have not won on the road, and we most likely will not have won a game by then.
I already have a viewing party planned with my Wizard fan friends to see who can stop the streak Sunday!!
nbadraft.net has Valanciunas being compared to Nenad Krstic and Primoz Brezic…. no thanks.
I’d rather not take a pick that will determine the course of this franchise for the next 5 years and use it on an international player. They seem to miss more than turn into all stars.
But those other guys Scott listed would all work for me.
The Walsh University Cavaliers are undefeated in NAIA II competition. Like OSU and the Cleveland Caves the Walsh streak is now at 24. It could be at 25 by towmorrow evening! Check GOOGLE: Walsh University, OH, Athletics.

Ah, more draft discussion… Sullinger is HIGHLY unlikely to be a star in the NBA. Barkley is one in a million – he had a similar body, and was much better in the pros than in college. Most guys like Sullinger become middling NBA players. When comparing Perry or Terrence Jones to Durant, it’s worth remembering that Durant was a GREAT college player as a freshman, and they’ve barely shown ability.
If there’s a superstar in the next draft, it looks like Irving is the guy. Hopefully he’ll be back in time to show us something.
Jamario Moon helps extend the Cavaliers losing streak by not knowing how much time is on the clock at the end of the game. Instead of hoisting up a potential game tying three point attempt he passes to Jamison who is even further away. Go back to the Globetrotters loosey goosey!
