This, I can live with: “The Browns are wrapping up their spring work this week with their final OTA practices and a mandatory minicamp, the surest sign yet that real football isn’t too far away. And it’s that real football — not this no-pads stuff — that really gets Vickers going. He’s thinking this is the year that the dirty work he does from the fullback position earns him enough notice to merit a Pro Bowl selection, and he hinted that he’s as ready as ever to do such work.
“I’m gonna make people pay even more this year,” Vickers said.
“They’re gonna pay. Each year I get madder and madder that I don’t go (to the Pro Bowl). It’s not my fault when everybody (ends up) on their backside.” [Zac Jackson/The OBR]

Do we get dibs? “Nice to see Victor Martinez, obviously, but it’s also nice to see his son, Victor Jose. The 5-year-old boy was in full Red Sox uniform this afternoon, including batting gloves and wrapped wrists, as he took batting practice at Progressive Field. He’s a natural, lining shots to both sides of the infield. He also has an exact replica of his daddy’s stance. Little Vic, though, only bats from the right-hand side. For now.” [CastroTurf]

So…Nebraska in the Big Ten? At least Suh’s already gone… [Buckeye Battlecry]

I wish he’d be pissed when in Cleveland: “Let’s get this out of the way: Matt LaPorta is pissed. Stole his girlfriend from Younglife camp pissed. Wouldn’t let him listen to his DC Talk album after curfew pissed. Teaching evolution in his classroom pissed. Tonight, Matt was 4-4 with 3 HRs, thumbing his nose at Jay, Tony Lastoria, and everyone else who says he was being a petulant child who refused to go on the DL despite being clearly injured, as evidenced by his diminishing power. It appears that wasn’t the problem. The problem, I guess, was Jon Nunnally. At any rate, Matt looks healthy and already too good for AAA (SSS notwithstanding) so, godspeed young slugger.” [Lets Go Tribe]

And finally, Grady: “The downfall of Grady Sizemore has now finally officially bottomed out. With microfracture surgery on his knee ending his 2010 campaign we are left wondering what has happened to our former All-Star.” [Waves of Arms]

I love the smell of Napalm in the morning.
“Wouldn’t let him listen to his DC Talk album after curfew pissed.”
Funny.
There’s all this talk about Texas/TTech/A&M/Oklahoma getting offers from Pac-10. Any chance the Big 10 (or 11? 12? whatever) goes after any/all of them too? I heard the Pac-10 is offering a TV network, we already have one, and our flagship program isnt banned from the next two bowls. I would think we would have the edge. Right?
I think Masterson got a point last night for the Masterson v.s. Bucholtz argument…..
So he’s now trailing 25-1*
*no real basis on scoring.*
It was nice seeing such a well pitched game by Masterson. I’m so used to seeing his pitch count in the 100’s by the fifth inning, he limited his mistakes and he FINALLY got some run supprt.
@ Stinkfist – we’ll have something about all that at noon today, I believe.
The texas quadfecta doesn’t make sense from a regional perspective, but does make sense for them to join the PAC-16. We’ll get Nebraska, Missouri, ND(?), etc.
If there are 4 – 16 team conferences I think that makes sense for football. Except for the teams that are left outside of the 64, but how realistic are their chances anyway?
Hey Stinky Fist, I would expect the Big 10 to talk to these programs… But there isn’t an ESPN base located in Ann Arbor, Lansing, or Columbus… So Obviously USCLA ESPN isn’t going to talk about it…
BUT, how many power houses can the Big Ten have? Penn State, U of M (historically) OSU, Wisconsin, Notre Dame (eventually), Nebraska, Texas? Oklahoma? It seems kind of like beating a dead horse… Plus the schools rumored to be going to the PAC 10 are spread teams that don’t play defense, they won’t play well in Big Ten country.
Dagnabit Denny. Although I guess the article says basically what I said (which isn’t very revolutionary anyway). Battlecry does have a nice map.
/doesn’t necessarily click through articles
The Indians coaches suffer from the same problem the Cavalies did: coaches who cannot work with young supposedly talented players. Look at the history of coaches/managers and you see a huge part of the problem. Unfortunately I don’t see this changing if anything the Cavaliers will probably end up writing a whole new chapter. Meanwhile the Indians will continue to be lost with no signs of figuring it out.
The Cleveland Browns just might be, as incredible as it seems, Clevelands only real hope. Time will tell as they say.
Missouri may or may not be on the radar now. If Nebraska brings the KC market and Illinois has some influence on the St.L market, Mizzou may have shot themselves in the foot by being so blatant about wanting out of the BigXII.
ND is still the big fish.
Texas looks like a lost cause (though very long-shot anyway)
Maryland might be the 2nd biggest fish to get left.
And I still like the idea of Toronto (though doubt Delany gets that crazy)
Fun times.
How about this for a conference of ‘leftovers’
Kansas
K-State
Missouri
Iowa state
Louisville
West Virginia
Memphis
Cincinatti
Talk about a power basketball conference. Good times there
Sigh…it seems like only yesterday Vickers was being grabbed by K2 after scoring a meaningless TD and then doing a ridiculous dance in a drubbing against the yinzers. Our little boy is all growed up.
Who’s Vickers?
Is it possible these kids maybe aren’t as talented as previously thought?
Suh’s gone, but Jared Crick’s pretty frickin’ good. Bo Pellini’s said that Crick could end up being just as good as House of Spears.
The Buckeyes may benefit from Nebraska not being on the Big 10 schedule until 2011/12 – Crick could be gone by then, as well as stud cornerback Prince Amukamara.
Figured I’d throw this here since the other posts are sort of full and it’d get lost in the shuffle.
Is Izzo the best for the Cavs? Let’s see…
Brian Shaw? Brian Shaw isn’t bringing LeBron back to Cleveland, I’ll leave it at that.
JVG has been out of the league since the hand-checking rule. You could actually call that rule the “JVG-rule” due to how he tried to destroy basketball with the way he (and as a result others) played defense in the 90’s. So, I’m not so sure that he would be able to be as good of a coach as he was.
Byron Scott is the most apt comparison we’ll have in hindsight. He always got the most out of his teams and was great at exploiting matchups. It’s actually impressive his teams took games from those Lakers teams in the Finals when they had no business even being there.
So, can Izzo be better than Byron? Possibly. He definitely got the most out of his teams when it mattered the most. How many times did we see the Spartans sputter along all season and then magically become an unbeatable NCAA tourney team? Isn’t that what Phil Jackson does every year with the Lakers? What Boston did this year (though maybe not by design)?
He is considered an expert motivator, good at working the refs, and a work-a-holic on film. These are all good things for a NBA HC. I don’t know enough about his in-game tactic changes because in college HC’s really don’t have to do that much. They have systems and they adjust them, but it’s totally different from the rotating systems and matchup changes that NBA HC’s typically use.
The real issue will be who he gets to fill out his assistants and if they can help him learn the NBA game and the NBA players. These are some of the MSU alum’s he might bring in to help:
Eric Snow – ties to Cavs already, we know he’ll make a good HC some day. LeBron respects him. Can really help ramp Izzo up on NBA defense. Should be priority #1.
Sam Vincent – former Bobcats HC. Now HC of a D-League team. He should be call #2 and is a Lansing guy by birth and by school. He’d jump at the chance to be attached to Izzo.
Scott Skiles – obviously, he isn’t getting Skiles as an assistant, but they are good friends (Skiles is MSU alum) and Izzo may be able to poach an assistant off the Bucks staff to help him. Maybe this is where the Kelvin Sampson rumors really came from?
Shawn Respert – assistant for Rockets and last year became lead for their D-League team. He is now the director of player personell for that team.
Magic Johnson – doubtful, and I further doubt he’d be a good coach as he seems happy just gliding along as a TV guy, but I figured I’d include him.
His coaching tree is immense as well, but pretty much limited to college ranks.
With all due respect to Nebraska football…..the best thing to come out of that state is I-80.
@ Ron#16
Don’t forget that inflatable mascot. That’s pretty rad.
These are the “left over” schools from the Big 12…
Kansas
K-State
Missouri
Iowa state
(also Baylor is left out)
3 of these are Big East, and Memphis is CUSA.
Louisville
West Virginia
Memphis
Cincinatti
Maryland is an ACC school also.
But other then that from what Ive read the Big 10 wants ND as their top choice and may ditch Nebraska is ND wants to come. Itd be interesting to see if the B10 tries to scoop some of the leftovers up. I state would be a natural rivalry for Iowa, and we could bring in the Kansas’s and they up the B10 basketball… interesting things happenin…
@bobby – if that was directed at me, which it seems to be:
I understand those schools current affiliations. I was putting out there what seems like a real possibility that would be pretty fun (and that I have not seen out there). that’s all.
@MattyFos Charles Barkley thinks that mascot is turribul.
Rick, Charles Barkley is probably right.
