While We’re Waiting: Strikeouts, Losses, Aging, Lighty, and Etcetera
May 16, 2010Sunday Afternoon Open Thread
May 16, 2010The Indians put together a massive rally in the top of the ninth inning last night in Baltimore, fueled by Austin Kearns’ third home run of the season. The Tribe were down 2-0 going into the ninth, stifled by Orioles starter Brian Matusz. To close out the game the O’s inserted rookie closer Alfred Simon (5 for 5 in save opportunities to that point).
Kearns took the plate with the Tribe down 2-1 after Asdrubal Cabrera scored on a Shin-Soo Choo single. With two on, Kearns smashed the 0-2 pitch 415 feet into left field to put the Tribe up 4-2. Simon was pulled by O’s skipper Dave Trembley and replaced by Cla Meredith, who gave up a two-run double to Mike Redmond and a two-run homer to Trevor Crowe before closing out the inning.
The Tribe then closed out the game with Tony Sipp on the mound, giving up a double to Nick Markakis before registering the next three batsmen out to seal the win.
Overshadowed by the rally and dead bats early in the game was the solid pitching performance by rookie right-hander Mitch Talbot. The Fury gave up two one-run home runs but nothing else in his eight innings of work. Talbot finished with a stat line of 8.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K, and 2 HR. He is now 5-2 on the season with a 3.23 ERA.

9th inning heroics! Have to appreciate that. I am also appreciating the success of The Fury, even if not much fury is required to suffocate the Orioles’ hitting.
Oh, not being picky, but actually wondering: what purpose is being served by the quotation marks around “win” and “eight run rally”? They did actually win, and they did actually have an eight run rally…
@Laundromat I think he was emphasizing those words because you typically don’t see either of them in an Indians headline.
Yeah but the quotes just make it sound like we didn’t deserve to win
Yeah, italics would have made more sense. Or underlines. Don’t undermine this awesome victory, it was great to watch the pitching matchup and then the explosion in the 9th. The only runs off the 2 HRs were given up to one of the best sluggers in the AL right now.
You guys really don’t like jokes.
