12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas: Day 11
December 21, 2009Josh Cribbs’ Super Powers: Socks as Arm Warmers
December 21, 2009Do you want the good news or the bad news? Well, the good news is that the Ohio State Buckeyes will face the Ducks of Oregon with their top two wide receivers, DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher. The bad news is that they will have to play the game without Duron Carter and Ray Small. Carter and Small are both ineligible to play in the game. Duron Carter apparently hasn’t qualified to play due to academic circumstances. Ray Small, whose career demands a better metaphor than “dog house,” will miss the game for allegedly violating team rules. As usual, the blanket phrase was used and we don’t really know what those team rules were that Small broke.
Now, missing these two players doesn’t sink the Buckeyes’ chances in the game by any stretch. Then again, it isn’t exactly going to help either. As Eleven Warriors points out, Small and Carter were the Buckeyes’ two leading punt return men. Even that isn’t a giant deal as long as whoever steps in doesn’t fumble the ball. Other than that, the Buckeyes should probably be fine. This season Terrelle Pryor passed for only about 150 yards per game anyway. And if this means Pryor will be targeting the tight ends a few more times, I actually love it. Tight ends seem to be the forgotten part of Ohio State’s offense.
Just in case you don’t know, the Rose Bowl will be played at 4:30 PM on New Year’s Day. As of this typing, the Buckeyes are 3.5 point underdogs to the Ducks of Oregon.

So I wonder how long it will take for Ray Small’s dad to cry to the media about how misunderstood and picked on Ray Ray is.
This shouldn’t be the end of the world. The risk/reward factor with Ray-Ray returning anything and everything kicked was something that always had my blood pressure up. Rose’s depth will be missed but he was more or less a body.
This whole New Year’s Day bowl game thing is throwing a wrench in my football watching works. I have no problem leaving my family any other Saturday or non-New Year’s Day to watch football. It’s also easy for my buddies to leave their wives/children to come to my house to watch football on normal football days. New Year’s is a holiday and therefore I’m not sure what is acceptable here. Ideas?
Clown Baby –
New Year’s Day is on a Friday. Watch the game and promise to take the family somewhere nice on Saturday. Then, make a big deal out of the fact that you dedicated your day to them and will not be watching any football.
New Year’s day is a quasi-holiday anyway. It’s not like your bailing on them on Christmas.
I’m with Clown in that I hated watching Small field punts, I always expected the worst. I hate the fact this keeps happening because I think it will start to affect the recruiting at Glenville. That being said, Ray is a punk, and has been since the day he came to Columbus. Remember when his dad said he was better than Teddy? Sure thing bud, how many games has he been suspended for in his mediocre career? Anyway, I hate that we lose Carter, and hopefully no one else is ruled out.
Honestly the recruiting out of Glenville is completely hit or miss. They said it well at 11W today – the best recruit out of Glenville ’06 is Bryant Browning.
Yes – Glenville provided Smith, Whitner, Ginn, and even quality guys like Jermale Hines. But there have also been HUGE busts out of Glenville, ie Small and Rose. There are great guys that come out of there, and some guys that don’t live up to the massive hype.
It’s clear that Ray Small and Rob Rose are secretly the same person. He just climbs in and out of the shells of each of their bodies but doesn’t know how to act differently to distinguish their personalities. I liken it to the little alien that was in the dead guy in Men In Black.
The best to come out of Glenville is Browning!!?? ARE YOU SERIOUS!? (Dicky V voice). How can you say that when he’s been nothing but TERRIBLE as a RT at OSU and been a decent run blocking guard the past year? He won’t be picked higher than the 5th or 6th round and has never even sniffed any type of important award for a lineman.
Troy Smith happened to of led his team to the BCS National Championship team and won the Heisman. I dunno if that’s good, it just kinda seems like it might be.
Agree with Denny here. It’s not like all the recruting from Glenville won a national title or anything. They could use players from all over anyway.
@ S-Dub – “The best player out of Glenville ’06”. Step off the ledge and let that settle in for a little bit. It’ll help your blood pressure.
