April 12, 2009How comfortable do you feel trading Brady Quinn for a first rounder? Would you want to go ahead with this 2009 football season without wide receiver Braylon Edwards?
These are the questions that are the keys of the Cleveland Browns off-season trade talks. Michael Lombardi of The National Football Post reports that the Browns currently have separate deals in the making for first round draft picks for both Brady Quinn and Braylon Edwards.
Another intriguing concept he brings up is the Browns steady increase in interest in Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree. The Browns have noticeable lack of depth at the wide receiver spot, and with Edwards habit of dropping passes in 2008, it might be time to rebuild the position entirely.

why not just cut and paste a link to Lambardi’s article
I say if we can get a first for BQ let him go, he hasn’t proven anything except that he likes muscle milk. For Braylon a first and third would work. Then we could draft both Maclin and Crabtree.
That’s right, I said trade BQ.
I’m not sure why here’s such a buzz about Lombardi’s remarks. They’re similar to what has been going around among hard-core Browns fans for well over a month. Anyone who has been tracking the Browns knows that they’re talking about deals for multiple players and are open to trades on just about anyone.
The notion of “deals on the table” sounds weak to me. If they’re something they’re going to do, why wait? The reason is, like it’s always been, the deals the team makes will have some dependency on how the draft breaks down.
Plus, of course, Lombardi is trying to transition from the world’s worst NFL executive this side of Mike Brown to being a journalist. I’m not sure how ineptitude in one field portends success in another.
@Denny- Crabtree & Maclin…. What are we? The Detroit Lions?
Get it done.
Get Crabtree!!! I don’t enjoy hearing that the Browns are going to trade our only starting WR left and a young QB away, but if it means completely rebuilding by getting 1st Rd. picks I say do it. I just ask that they draft Crabtree and I’ll let everything else slide.
I would say get crabtree, but if they like Maclin more, then I wouldnt mind him either. They should also look at some LB help, and maybe Rey Maualuga could be an intriuging option now, and then get Nicks from UNC in rd. 2.
I’m completely against trading BQ. Is he a sure fire answer? Absolutely not. But QB’s need a few years to develop. So unless we think Anderson IS the answer, it means drafting a rookie now and waiting a few years, or getting some journeyman QB in the meantime. I don’t really like any QB’s in the draft past Stafford, so I really am apprehensive about trading Quinn, though I like the idea of picking up firsts. Look at Quinn this way–Shaun Rogers and Culter both complained because they didn’t get attention and love from their coaches. Quinn didn’t, despite having to wait years to this point to play and rumors upon rumors about trades. He has poise behind the scenes, in press conferences (remember the one after the firings?) and in the pocket–I see a leader there, at least one worth a chance.
On the other hand, I say go from Crabtree 100% so long as Curry isn’t there. Get Edwards out of here.
I am not sure how the team plans to pay for three 1st round choices either. I absolutely take the deal for Edwards, who will leave next year anyway. The only way I feel better about trading Quinn is for Sanchez. Sanchez has a the deep arm, but not the Anderson type Gunslinger. I like his poise and leadership ability as well.
Jake, I get what you are saying about BQ, but do you think he can be an elite QB? I personally think DA has moe potential then Quinn, and it goes back to the arm. Everyone tries to say Quinn has good accuracy, but I saw him perform about as well as DA, and he never went downfield with it, something DA will do. Now, it is still doubtful that DA is a long term answer, but I don’t think Quinn is either, and getting a 1st rounder for that would be great. Also, it is premature to say that Quinn is a leader and poised and all that. If DA beats him this training camp (if both are there), then Quinn will demand a trade.
Trading Quinn is also more beneficial then trading Edwards, since we have 2 equals at QB and nothing after Braylon at WR. If we do trade Edwards I hope a player comes in with it, whether its a WR or one of there DL/LBs.
There is absolutely no way that Mangini has looked at Anderson in film and said “without a doubt, this is our QB”. Quinn won’t be traded because he wants to see for himself which QB is the answer, and we don’t know much about Quinn, he had two starts where he was healthy. Who would offer a first round pick for Quinn anyways? He hasn’t proven jack, and a team would probably be more inclined to draft Sanchez instead of trading for BQ
Not trading Braylon would be dumb I think, unless the offers being made are unacceptable. Unless we franchise him he is out of here, and even if we did it would be for the purposes of getting something for him in a trade instead of nothing
@ ricky… thats why they would franchise him.
@ Ricky: A team that is not drafting high enough to grab Sanchez would be looking at Quinn. Someone like Denver or San Fran if Jacksonville takes Sanchez or how about the Jets or Lions (with their second #1 if they pass on Stafford with the #1 pick). In other words there are a bunch of teams that would take Quinn off our hands for a first round pick.
Another season with Derek Anderson as our QB? Doesn’t say much for Mangini’s talent evaluation.
Am I the only one that loves the Ricky Bobby dynamic here?
If you ain’t first, you’re last?
El diablo…Spanish for fighting chicken
What is that, a catch phrase?
What team would give up a first rounder for a high maintenance, me-first receiver with an unresolved case of the dropsies who is looking for a new contract? Believe that deal when it’s actually done.
You guys are unbelievable! You want to trade your only deep threat receiver who is capable of 60+ catches a year for an unproven talent in Crabtree…who FYI is a bit injury prone. In this case your #1 receiver is a rookie. Who is the #2 and 3 receiver? You would give up an experienced receiver for an unproven rookie.
MANGINI…signed a bunch of second stringers who are mostly over 30 years old. You do not rebuild with 30+ year old talent. Mangini needs to get 1st team starting players…not backups. Mangini was with the Jets for 3 years and he has an under 500 record…missed the playoffs.
REBUILDING…The browns have rebuilt this team twice under Davis and Savage…now 3 years later we are doing it again under Mankok who have a losing percentage
BRADY QUINN…Lately, I see all these postings about trading Quinn..and everyone gets excited about Sanchez. I regularly go to USC games and Sanchez is not the right QB for the Browns. Comparing college ststs Brady has the better numbers. Having a big gun of an arm is nice, but it is not necessary. BQ has the heart, the brains and he is a winner all of his life. He is also a home town boy who deserves a shot to run the team. OTTO GRAHAM…Who was quite possibly the best QB in Browns history did not have a big arm. Otto was a winner with a huge heart. He just won games and won championships many years for the old Browns. BERNIE KOSAR…did not have a big arm, but he won games. FRANK RYAN…I know you are thinking Frank who? 1964 NFL championship team. He was a good and smart QB who won the championship and beat the Colts.
ANDERSON…His stats last year were awful. We should trade him. BUT, in today’s NFL you need multiple QB’s due to the injury factor. We were down to our 4th or 5th string QB. This can happen to anyone. If you trade for Quinn…who is DA’s back up and the 3rd stringer.
DRAFT…I cannot believe that Mangini is going tohit a homerun with every draft pick they select. How many Tim Couch’s are there going to be. For every Joe Thomas we get in the draft…there are going to be 5 Tim Couch
KEEP QUINN…KEEP EDWARDS
Quinn and Edwards needs to prove themselves. If Edwards is gone next year…he needs to have a bust out year this year…he needs to catch 60+ this year. Quinn deserves a chance to be the starting Qb this year. Anderson will back up.
Many needs to fill.On defense…get starting people to stop the run and plug up the holes in passing defense. Maybe if we can keep other teams under 20 points a game…we may win more games
It does not matter who you get in the Draft you need a coach. Once you get a Coach you will return to greatness. I remember the days of the Dog Pound I think it was called. Loved it.
No way we can afford to sign three 1st round picks. It doesn’t make sense. Trade Braylon (even though i love his game), keep Quinn, and trade DA for whatever we can get. Draft Crabtree at 5 and use the remaining picks to fix the defense. We also need to sign a veteran receiver- Torry Holt?
Dale has a reasonable Reply with a lot of facts. I only disagree with the Otto Graham “may have been the best QB of the Browns. Otto was a pure Pro compared to any of the later QBs. Denny I need to ask you have you been watching Brown’s games the last two years? When did Brady Quinn have the chance to “Didn’t show anthing”? He’s sat on the bench for two years. He is the Franchise QB for the Browns this upcoming year and should play every game of this season. If he doesn’t show anything then I listen. He has a quicker release than DA and sees the field faster, he will be better this year than than any of the top 4 draft QBs that are available. If there’s anyone that wants to see A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN THE BROWNS THIS YEAR MORE THAN I DO THEN i’LL LISTEN TO THAT TOO! I’m 81 and I want respectability reestablished to the Browns of “46 through ’54!
@ Dale – Braylon is capable of 60 catches if he’s thrown to 180 times. Crabtree may be injury prone but he’s got hands and he performed while being double covered every game at TT. Comparing college stats between BQ and Sanchez, Sanchez won more. Isn’t that what matters? He won the big games. He never looked lost. Quinn NEVER won a big game. USC (x4), LSU, OSU all exposed him – Quinn only put up numbers against the armed forces. A “winner all his life”? If you count beating Army, Navy, and Air Force as big wins, along with barely beating Sparty under John L Smith. Heart and brains? How do you know this? Because he went to Notre Dame? Brady’s stats were just as bad as Anderson’s last year, if you want to play the numbers game. “Quinn and Edwards need to prove themselves” – what about last season, when Braylon crapped the bed all season, when not tearing his foot apart at practice?
@ #24 – a lot of facts, like the always measurable “heart, brains, and being a winner all his life?” Those are opinions, just like what I’ve had to say. Brady started three games last year and looked as miserable as DA. If he’s the “franchise QB for the Browns this upcoming year” why isn’t he the starter going in to camp? It’s a safe bet to say he should be better than the top 4 drafted QBs this year, because they’ll either be playing for the Lions or riding the bench. I hope the Browns do well, but I don’t think BQ and Braylon are the answers, and Mangini and Kokinis can establish their type of team by getting lots of draft picks. Kudos to being a longtime fan, I hope for all our sake the team gets turned around.
I realize that I may not sound like a “real brown” but that’s my opinion – I’ve never been impressed by BQ. He was hugely overrated at ND – his teams (especially his offenses) were never that good there, no matter how much everyone hyped him up. Please don’t bail him out by talking about his O-line. He still didn’t do well. To be frank, I honestly don’t think he’ll ever establish anything great in Cleveland. The team’s already rebuilding, and in my opinion they can do much, much better at QB than Brady Quinn. Get something for him while the team can.
Look the way it is, Braylon is gone they just are trying to get the most for him. CLE Wanted a 2nd Rd pick and a Steve Smith. NYG counter offered with 2nd Rd pick and Manningham or Hixon, and CLE said no. Was also rumered that CLE wanted Kiwanuka. Which tells me they are not thrilled with Curry or Orakpo, and Braylon will be gone. Now I hear that NYG wants Braylon bad and CLE up’ed it to a 1st and a 3rd.
As for Quinn and Anderson the media believes we can get a 1st for Anderson. I think the best thing to do would be to trade Quinn because he gives us the best case to get more picks. As for what somebody said about not being able to afford 3 first rd picks, with Quinn gone we wouldn’t have to pay him the 11million dollar bonus for playing 75% of the time when he beats out DA. So we could work with 3 picks.
I don’t think we have seen all that Quinn has to offer, and I like Quinn, but he has not always been the most accurate even going back to college. But we need to trade one of them, Savage screwed us by not trading Anderson before last season started when he was a hot commodity. Now people may not want him.
As for draft picks I hate Curry and Orakpo everyday and more as the draft nears. We need a impact LB not hybrid DE/LB, Linebacker! I want Maualuga so the draft picks would help that. If they have to trade down then do it but pretty sure something will get done by draft day. If they trade Braylon nab Crabtree with the 5 and a LB like Maualuga or Cushing or Matthews with the NYG pk. If they were to trade Quinn and get another 1st, then maybe Wells or grab another LB whichever one they didn’t take first.
Second Rd take our CB or Safety I like Vontae Davis or Alphonso Smith or even Deangelo Smith from Cin. Safety wise I like Louis Delmas or Rashad Johnon, or Patrick Chung from Oregon. Then with the 2nd Pick from the K2 trade draft Robiskie or another WR.
PS with our recieving core being pretty much depleated why haven’t we at the least brought in Torry Holt or Harrisson for a looksy. When you don’t have Recievers you need to take what you can when you can. I like Holt he just didn’t have a QB to throw to him last year. Harrison I don’t like quite as much but he could add depth.I mean imagine Crabtree, Holt, Harrisson, Robiskie, Cribbs, and Hubbard or Whoever?
PeeWee you have a lot on the ball and I like your style you’ve done some thinking. The Kokinis staff could use you! And I see Denny has a degree in Math he can devide. (with errors). As for why isn’t he starting? He has the your mentality. After summe camp he will be starting for some team. As for your comment on it’s safe bet Brady Quinn will be better than the top four QB in the draft I’m glad you agree. I understand your desire to let Mangini rebuild the team their way; however I am looking for more than 23 wins and 25 losses in three years with an obvious Hall of Famer like Favre. Let’s look at it this way We rebuilt for 5 years with Butch Davis, and then we rebuilt for 4 years with Savage and Crennell now do we want to “been there, done that” for the next 4 years. Give me a break and the rest of the Browns Fans and let’s start playing football. Is it that those that want to keep this up want live on the computer selecting draft picks and free agents(which by the way is what Kokinis and Mangini SHOULD have been doing .but were to busy talking some unknown out side of Cleveland. We had some talent last season on the Browns; but the staff didn’t want to get in their faces and tll them do do THEIR job that their getting paid for. Thats why Lerner wanted Mangini for a coach that would stand up to the primadonas. Mangini had that reputation. He has now ducked that problem by trading them. And you don’t have to sound like “Realbrown because I’m a hard ass that wants results NOW@!! We’re all in this together let’s stick together and demand results! Realbrown!
