March 25, 2009Well, not officially as a player, but the invite is there as a mentor.
In a recent interview with the New York Daily News, Browns head coach Eric Mangini discussed several different issues ranging from last year’s Jets meltdown, all the way to what he plans on doing with his new team. If you’re one that think that Mangini did not get along with his former quarterback, guess again.
“He might come out to training camp to visit,” Mangini said. “Maybe I will have him do the show team or just hang out.” […]
“I don’t think it would be anything formal,” Mangini said. “It’s not like we are hiring him to run the scout team. I don’t think he would be interested in that. He would be more like a visitor. An open invite.”
Mangini is reportedly a big fan of Favre’s presence with teammates – something that goes firmly against many of their rumors that were swirling last season when a few Jets players seemingly threw Brett under the media bus. Favre’s play over the second half of the season is arguably one of the reasons that Mangini was ousted with the Jets, so this definitely seems a bit odd on the cover. But then again, our head coach is also a big fan of veteran football players that can help smooth things along.
Favre undoubtedly was forced to learn the Jets system in very little time, even though one may argue that he had a “system” of his own that involved throwing into triple-coverage on a windy day. The thinking here is that Favre could spend a few days of the upcoming summer in Cleveland to tutor both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, assuming both are still here.
After all, what would another summer be without Brett Favre?

Maybe he’s going to team up with Brady Quinn for an EAS/Wrangler jeans cross-over.
/now I’m done
All Anderson needs is a QB who gambled too much teaching him about playing the position.
What is the fascination with the NFL and Brett Favre? I mean Reall dude? I am so sick of this over-the-hill-can’t-get-it-done-since-1998-has-been of a quarterback just trying to hold on to the spotlight for one more minute. He’s a HOF’r no doubt, I just with he’d let it go, go away for a few years, then we could appreciate his induction more when it rolls around.
John Madden just gave a big sigh of relief.
maybe he can have a guest spot on Joe Thomas’s fishing show.
So he can teach our guys how important showing up to team meetings are, what is the best time to throw an interception, and how to do commercials properly….well we got the first two down, but that commercial help could go a long way for Braylon and Brady
I dont know why everyone is upset with this. Brett Favre will go down as one of the best QBs to play the game. I know there has been a ton of controversial things surrounding this guy, but to have a guy come back in an informal atmosphere to teach BQ and DA a few things could not be bad. Sure, Favre took a lot of gambles when playing football. He also has the most TDs in NFL history, along with numerous other NFL records in passing (Iknow INTs is one of them). Its just giving whoever will be our QB a future first ballot HOF player to learn from.
#9, sigh…
a)
He’s a self centered attention seeker [insert more obvious not family friendly word]. It’s all about Brett, with no regard for how it affects the team. This is with regard to on and off field decisions (like playing the last 5 games for the Jets when he was obviously hurt, torpedoing their season)
b)
He didn’t watch game film “just goes out there trying to have fun”. Sounds a bit like Hughes doesn’t it. How is someone who doesn’t study the game going to teach anything?
c)
ok, my closing point is that the media love makes me angry, which has nothing to do with his play thus this would be a C+ thesis paper
@ DP – Two, Two EAS jokes today, ah ha ha!
Brett must be looking to drive up his spokesperson fee at Wrangler, ‘cuz this has all the makings of a “Bad Idea Jeans” commercial. He’s a one-time great to be sure, but at this point he’s one of the last guys I want around my quarterback(s): that ego thing can be contagious. Not to mention a media frenzy is the last thing a team of fragile egos needs–I think there will already be adequate pressure on them to begin with. May as well work a Braylon-for-T.O. trade while we’re at it.
Seeing as there were some here who didn’t get the “Airplane” reference a short time back, I figure maybe this might be necessary for the sake of clarity:

The LAST person we need mentoring our young QBs is Brett Favre.
Where’s Bernie? That’s who should be mentoring them. Although I’m not sure if DA is bright enough to absorb any knowledge Bernie might try to share with him…
if Bernie showed up to browns camp Quinn would cream his shorts, and bring in his #19 poster that probably still hangs in his parents house.
Um…Bernie is at camp. A lot. I was at two practices last year, and Bernie was on the field for both.
Scott: “even though one may argue that he had a “system” of his own that involved throwing into triple-coverage on a windy day”
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
So if Bernie’s there, why not just “invite” him to do some mentoring. If he already is mentoring, then what’s the need for Favre!? I don’t want Favre anywhere near DA while he’s on the Browns’ roster.
i would give bernie the nod over fav-rah any day…. brett was undoubtedly one of the all-time greats, but he kinda did things his own (i.e. reckless) way. he will NEVER be remembered for his knowledge; he’ll be known for his improvisational skills. bernie was, and still is, a student of the game. if anyone has the right to teach quinn and/or anderson how to play QB, i say it’s him.
in all honesty, i just love hearing bernie talk, and a spot on the coaching staff would promote that. hearing that raspy, intoxicated voice is like cocaine for my ears. what a guy.
If bernie is there during camp and not mentoring the QB’s than why is he there? Look, I love the memories of the Browns run back in the mid to late 80’s but jesus….GET OVER IT. I am tired of all these blogs filled with “homer” talk…..”we need webster back to coach the wr’s…..we need minnifield back to coach the secondary” “bernie this…..mack that”…ITS OVER…we need to move on….thus far in the expansion era of the browns it has been ugly at best. I am glad mangini is trying to open a new page and get everyone off the past accomplishments of the organization. We need to look forward and not the rear view mirror.
Hey,
Don’t tell TD your writing about the Browns
