Miami Police Awaiting Stallworth’s Results
March 16, 20092009 NCAA Tournament: Though Not Exactly the Big East, Ohio is Well-Represented
March 16, 2009The Indians have a new pitcher this season named Carl Pavano. Apparently he played for the Yankees last. He was talked about extensively as a bust in Joe Torre’s book. He has had numerous health problems that kept him off the field AFTER he signed a big contract to play in the Bronx. Anyway, I didn’t know if you guys had heard anything about him before. He is trying to overcome his injury-riddled past to pitch in the Indians’ rotation this year. Blech. We GET it.
I don’t mean to poke fun at spring training baseball coverage (much.) But it seems like there is one of these storylines every single season. Whether it is Matt Lawton coming to camp on a free agent year looking like he was hanging out with Roger Clemens in the off-season. Or whether it is Juan Gonzalez coming to Cleveland after turning down an 8 year $140 million deal in Detroit Rock City. Or even in the case of Adam Miller and that pesky finger of his. These cliche spring stories abound every single year. This year it is Carl Pavano, his health, and whether he can ever get back to being the pitcher the Yankees thought they were getting when they signed him away from the Marlins.
So Pavano is healthy right now. He has pitched ok so far this Spring. He hopes to be healthy more than the fans and beat writers do. That’s all there is to say. He has been getting grounders, has had mixed results, but appears to be healthy so far. So can we please just fast forward to mid-season and find out if he works out yet or not? I will buy a Delorean if we can make it happen. Who’s got the flux capacitor and the contacts with the Lybians?

This might be the perfect link to go along with this story
I always love the “best shape of his career” lines. That along with any time Eric Wedge says that he plans on being more aggressive on the bases…EVERY year.
I have the suitcase full of used pinball machine parts covered.
Agreed… although I must admit it would be really sweet if he turned around and won more games during his 4 years as a yankee. That would mean a 10 win season and we could rub it in the yankee faces. I am really hoping they fall behind the rays and sox again too…
Two quick responses:
1) If you can give Hoynes and another idea of what to write about during an extended spring training when absolutely nothing is happening, he’d probably welcome the input. It can’t be very fun to interview that surly so and so.
2) In this town people seem to be more interested in how good the linebackers for our hopeless football franchise will be 6 months from now than how good the starting pitchers for our well-run baseball franchise will be 3 weeks from now.
There is this other team, called the Cavs. Not sure if you’ve heard of them but they play basketball. They got this guy, LeBron (yeah, he goes by just his first name, crazy isn’t it), who’s pretty good. Rest of the team is pretty solid too.
So, if you have some time, they will be playing for a couple more months. You know, if you can’t find that Delorean and all.
All I have to say is read comment #6 by Swig! Very well-said and thank you!!!
Go Cavs!
Here at WFNY we are complex creatures. Our sports news is NOT mutually exclusive. You can read about the Cavaliers, Browns AND Indians. In fact, if we felt like it we could cover all of the above and an occasional story about Antarctica if we really wanted. We could do all of the above.
If you only want to read the Cavs news, just click this link and we won’t pester you with these stories about the Tribe. 🙂

1.21 gigawatts? 1.21 gigawatts?
I say keep the Tribe news coming…I can’t wait for opening day!
Craig – I am now looking forward to the Antarctica story.
Bring it on!
That is my challenge for the rest of 2009… find a way to tie in Antarctica with Cleveland sports. It might have to be something involving Boobie Gibson’s shooting, but I think I can do it.
I hope people realize that was tongue-n-cheek.
🙂
Why do I get the feeling Pavano will strain his back during his first start, say in the third inning?
No worries, we’ve still got Adam Miller in the wings. That’s if he keeps his middle finger clean.
