While We’re Waiting…
December 22, 200812 Days- Almost Finished…
December 22, 2008With this story from WKYC’s Jim Donovan, it appears that the final wheel has fallen off of the Browns 2008 season:
…Defensive lineman Shaun Smith hit quarterback Brady Quinn. It is still unclear if the hit was a sucker punch or with a weight. Many media sources in town are trying to track down the full story.
I also find this tidbit interesting…
It must be noted that Smith was rumored to be the supposedly unnamed player who quit on the Browns in their loss against the Denver Broncos that Jamal Lewis and Joshua Cribbs were talking about. Smith has denied that allegation.
Not the greatest news for this team, let alone a guy who frequently represents said team on STO’s Browns football program. I’m willing to bet that he Smith doesn’t touch on this in his blog before the cat comes out of the proverbial media bag. If anyone’s keeping an official list of players not likely to be back next season, feel free to add Smith.
Obviously, we’ll update as needed.

This sucks on so many levels:
1) toward the end of last season it looked like he was going to be a solid player
2) I guess I always just hoped that a new coach would tighten some things up, but the problems apparently run much deeper. Thanks, Romeo, for instilling entirely ZERO DISCIPLINE in these players.
3) What the heck is Quinn thinking starting a fight with a guy who out-weighs him by at least 100 pounds WHILE HE’S HEALING UP FROM FINGER SURGERY ON HIS FREAKING THROWING HAND??????
(1 – “he” was Smith, re: being a solid player)
I’m not too sure that Quinn started much here… Just my first thought on the matter
Couldn’t it be possible for Smith to sucker punch Quinn AND use a weight?
Just sayin..
“Who throws a shoe?”
This team is a mess!!! Do you think the Rooney family would take us in?
I wouldn’t have been more surprised by this if I got hit upside the head with a… Wait, what?
If Shaun Smith hit me with anything (including a pillow), I wouldn’t wake up for a week.
Maybe Brady had ‘EAS muscles’ going and thought he could take Smith?
Now I’m done.
[…] has a report that cites WKYC-TV’s Jim Donovan has confirming the existence of said rumor. (Waiting For Next Year also has a report on this rumor, citing the Cleveland Sports Examiner story as its […]
I guess what I heard as I was flipping through channels last night and came across Bruce Drennen talking about it on STO was that they were BOTH talking a lot of noise.
I guess these are the only two players not named Cribbs on this team that show any fight. Now if we could direct that towards the opponents, maybe that would work a little better
On the bright side, at least we actually had a defensive lineman hit a QB yesterday.
Smith was jelous that Brady was named best looking player in the league. Hey does anyone know the current draft position of the Browns — tied with the Raiders and Seahawks now — which one goes first?
AdamPS for the win!
@ Adam- ZING!!!
Anon: My thoughts exactly…….where would Skip Bayless rank Quinn now with a shiner?
Well, on the positive side, maybe Quinn was trying to take the regins as leader for once, called out Smith and he didn’t like being called out by the pretty boy
How could we have forgotten…
My God! Good news fans, the Browns are showing signs of life for the first time in weeks. As a matter of fact they appear to be beating the crap out of each other. It looks like Shaun Smith is trying to hit Brady Quinn, and why not, everyone else in the league does. Smith swings and misses. I don’t know Monte, it looks like Quinn is carrying his left a little low. This could hurt him in the later rounds.
From what I hear, this actually happened a few weeks ago. Also hear it was more than likely he got hit with the weight.
@Jack Gonzo- good remembery. (Yes, I just made that word up.)
Shaun Smith has to be the biggest fattest out of shape lineman to appear regularly on a weekly professional football show (STO). The guy runs his fat lame mouth incessantly, while never making neither a tackle or quarterback pressure the entire season. Literally and figuratively a fat zero of a player who tries to talk and act like he’s a team leader.
I’m sure a/the real team leader (Brady Quinn) made fatboy feel jealous, along with the fact that he’s nothing more than one of the fatboy out of shape defensive tackles that fatman Crennel seems to collect. The reality was too much………the fact that he hit or attacked the team’s future QB should be cause for said fatboy’s immediate dismissal. While I’m sure he quit, it’s hard to tell since he never moves whether putting forth effort or not. A total waste of a roster spot. Thank you again Phil Savagary.
Re: draft ties, the league does coin flips to determine order at the Combine in February. Hence, the one year we lost to Miami (2004, I think) and they still got to pick ahead of us because of a coin flip.
dude, randy, shaun rogers has been a stud for most of the year. i have from multiple sources that knew brady back in high school that he regularly tans, shaves his whole body, and just generally is a spoiled jock who has been handed everything.
Perhaps Romeo is collecting all these fat linemen for a giant Maury episode of which one is my son?
@Scotty P:
Maybe he’ll get extra points for looking like that dreamy Brad Pitt in Fight Club…
This from the PD:
BEREA — Browns tight end Darnell Dinkins confirmed on the WQAL 104-FM this morning that an altercation occurred between Browns quarterback Brady Quinn and defensive lineman Shaun Smith last week and that Quinn had a mark on his face.

The thing is Smith was Robaire back up and wasn’t susposed to be playing except in relief. This whole season tanked as far as QB pressure when he got hurt preseason. The rotation was junked. Peak at linebacker wow. Not to mention if we would have let DA sign elsewhere and took the 1st and 3rd draft picks. Can you say starting D-tackle and decent corner in the third??
