They’re Not Saying “Boo”…
September 22, 2008Former Indians File: Bradley to Quit Baseball?
September 22, 2008While tossing Brady Quinn into the fourth quarter of yesterday’s game would not have been the best idea, it appears that he is now one step closer to assuming the roll of starting quarterback. Assuming that practice reps are any indication, Derek Anderson is officially on notice.
Although Crennel didn’t say Monday that he’s handing the reins over to Quinn, the coaching staff plans to give Quinn more practice reps with the first team this week. It’s the biggest indictment of Anderson to date following Sunday’s 28-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in which Anderson had one of the worst performances of his career. He completed just 14-of-37 passes for 125 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
“We will definitely try to get the other guy [Quinn] ready and ready to go,” Crennel said. “We’ll see how it progresses from there. [It means] probably a few more reps in practice right now.”
Right now, being the key words.
There are grumblings from those close to the situation that are hinting towards the fact that Anderson may not be over his concussion from the preseason debacle against the Giants. It makes a bit of sense given how on target he was against the Jets, before the storm of the century rained on his parade, compared to being downright terrible yesterday. In fact, no one on this team has really been the same since that game – but a lot does start with the man under center.
ESPN’s James Walker briefly mentioned that the Browns are also looking to change things up at other positions. Given our severe lack of depth, I’m unsure as to what changes could be made outside of that at quarterback. Of course, this is assuming that “head coach” is not a “position.”

I think that when you lose a ton of games in a row ( and I think it’s at least a little fair to count preseason) changes need to be made.
Next week the toilet bowl–Browns vs. Bengals. Can you imagine what it will be like if the Browns lose to Cincy?
I’m sorry to say that I don’t see the Browns winning much more than 4 games this year . Injuries or no, the defense is abysmal.
And just when I was hoping to have 2 consecutive seasons with only a marginal interest in the draft….
Losing to Cincy is not out of the question. Their offense finally started clicking yesterday, and given our pass defense… We could be in for a long day. Eff Derek Anderson. I have been campaigning against him since last season. I’m hoping all of you guys are finally starting to come around to the idea of Brady Quinn being the starter. That’s why they drafted him. He’s sat long enough, see what the kid can do.
Brady will give you the same as DA. A whole lotta nothin’. I called 6-10 for this year after I saw the schedule. I may have to lower that to 4 wins.
Anderson sucks. Lets not use the concussion as an excuse. He didn’t have a concussion last year. He sucked last year the second half of the season. This organization is completely incompetent. From Savage, to Crennel, to Randy Lerner, to DA, and onwards. What a joke. I used to laugh at the Bengals and the Lions. No reason to anymore, we’re right there with those joke teams. This has been disgusting how they’ve handled the Quinn situation. Morons. Absolutely terrible.
Of course Anderson will start sunday in Cincinnati. And I’ll root against his sorry ass to hopefully help the long-term health of the franchise. This is pathetic.
The defense is abysmal?
Last week they gave up 10 points, and yesterday they basically gave up 14 points. While they are a problem, they aren’t THE problem.
I’m not in the Quinn camp, but if they think DA is still messed up from the concussion they should let Quinn start vs Cinci (starting vs the Giants would be a mess). Hopefully DA gets his head straight and we can go back to the having too many QBs “problem”.
It doesnt suprise me that much that Derek is still feeling the affects of the concussion. Roethlisberger was absolutely terrible a few years ago after his “concussion.” He didnt get right again until something like 2/3 through the season.
@ Cindy I think that when you lose a ton of games in a row ( and I think it’s at least a little fair to count preseason) changes need to be made…
I think the next change to be made would be sending Romeo on a bus out of town. Especially if they lose to Cincy.
I agree, DA & Romeo… someone bring them out back and take care of it.
I agree, in that this defense isn’t currently going to be able to keep every team under 10 points to win (like, say, the Ravens’ is, apparently). This season was predicated on the idea that the defense could be middle-of-the-road at best, and the Browns would succeed based on an explosive offense (see: Colts, Indianapolis circa 2006).
Nicko–you make a fair enough argument about the defense not being the only goat.
I guess I just expected them to be BETTER with all the money they threw at a few key defensive players.
Still, 28 points to Baltimore’s offense? “Abysmal ” might be harsh . I’ll go with “embarrassing” instead.
Can we trade Crennel for Kiffin? That’d be a great move.
Cindy, one problem though, when your offense continues to give the other teams offense inside your own twenty, you’re gonna give up a touchdown or two.
If they lose to Cincy I wouldn’t be surprised to see DA shipped to Minnesota and Romeo shipped back to Sizzler. Coach Chud can hold the reigns till the Stache arrives in Jan.
Granted it’s still early in the season. The AFC is wide open for anyone. If it was any year I was hoping it this one. Now I don’t have to sell my car for Superbowl tickets in Tampa. Maybe I lucked out 🙂
I like nobody’s idea.
Is there a link to the Colbert Report episode in the picture?
No I don’t think Kiffen would be the answer either. It is time to go with Brady, especially out of the bye and to probably let go of RAC. I doubt that would be enough of a break to totally break from a 3-4 and start using a 4-3, but that is cleary the direction this team needs to go. I think the line would be better in a 4-3 and we would see some some pressure. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, I don’t know.
It was said in a previous posting somewhere, but we don’t need another first time head coach. I don’t care what it would cost, but it is time to bring in someone like Cowher, who has had success, didn’t get canned, and knows how to build a defense. The style of play the Steelers were always known for under him was tough, got pressure, tackled well, all things the Browns cannot currently do.
When the heck did Lane Kiffin become the hot commodity in coaching? Yes, he is dealing with the single craziest owner in American sports, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has done very little. I can’t see him being more than a lateral move from Crennel, at least based on what he’s done so far. For me, the only right move to make is to get Cowher. I admit, Martyball is a nice thought for the nostalgia of it all–and certainly better than Butterball–but lets be real: Marty is old. Old coaches rarely succeed in this day and age of pro football. And let’s not let time and recent ineptitude cloud the fact that Marty makes his living choking in the playoffs. Many have said they’d be happy just to make the playoffs regularly, but how long will that contentment last if/when it starts happening again? Was it “fun” watching the Tribe spit the bit last season? How about watching the Cavs getting swept by San Antonio? We don’t want or need “close” in this town, we need titles. It’s time to stop waiting for next year already. Cleveland deserves better: stop setting the bar low and being happy “just to be in it”.
