Braylon Edwards Update
August 11, 2008Carlos Boozer: Betrayal Skull Dude
August 11, 2008This has nothing to do with Cleveland sports, but when an athletic event moves you like the US men’s 400 meter freestyle relay did last night, you have to mention it. I’m not gong to describe it to you, or give any kind of analysis. Pat Forde did an excellent job with that in this column. What I can tell you is that I was ready to fall asleep last night right before that event, and it got my adrenaline pumping so much I was up for hours afterward.
With 50 meters left I thought we were watching the end of Phelps’ 8-gold chase. I was thinking exactly what Pat Forde wrote- no way. There was no way that Lezak would be able to catch the speedy Bernard. But little by little, he found himself in the hunt, and I found myself in awe when he touched the wall .08 seconds ahead of the French team. I imagine that you are going to be seeing that race quite a bit on ESPN and all over the news. It might even get overplayed, not that ESPN has ever done that before. So before we’ve seen and read about it a million times, let me say well done gentlemen. Well done!

up for hours….with nary a post to show for it 🙂
i agree that race had me and my girlfriend clapping and on the edge of our seats.
and of course it was great to see team usa pumping their fists as the trash talking french just stood around looking awkward.
and dont know if its sour grapes or just simply a reaction to NBC not playing nice with sharing their footage, but last night i turned on sportscenter to catch some team usa/china basketball coverage, and they opened with honestly around 20 minutes about golf. tiger woods-less golf nonetheless.
I caught the replay of the race this morning online. Even knowing how it ended it was still pretty amazing.
it was awesome, i jumped out of my seat when i saw Lezak inching closer and won the race. I didn’t think he’d have a chance but that was some amazing swimming right there.
Now that it has been mentioned… can NBC be any more delusional with their online video? Windows Media Player Update, Microsoft Silverlight Plugin, no FireFox support and even so the “download” functionality crashed my computer VERY BADLY twice. It’s called YouTube. Look into it. Torturing potential viewers is not a good idea.
The race was incredible by the way. Just to play Devil’s Advocate, was this an amazing victory by the US or an amazing choke by Bernard of France? Either way it is fun for us, but I am just wondering.
Craig if you listen to Rowdy Gaines’ breakdown of the race afterward, I think that is a great question. The first time Lezak had the lead was at the pad, and it seemed like Bernard ‘short-armed’ it. (I don’t know if that is an actual term or not.) No question that Lezak wanted it more at the end. He was focused. And while we’re on it, what amazing camera work to capture something so quick underwater!
I missed it while flying back from Ohio to DC.
Haven’t had time to catch ESPN yet, and don’t feel like dealing with non-youtube.
Way to make me wait NBC.
Side note: not usually impressed by those kinds of things, but how cool were the opening ceremonies with all the drummers?
ESPN seems to be trying to ignore the olympics. The only thing I have seen them talk about regarding the olympics is when the rumor started that Lebron or Kobe would take 50 mill to go overseas. Around the Horn did talk about the 4X100 relay but only briefly.
I didn’t watch this live, but my friend showed it to my today on NBC’s website. The thing that jumped out to me first was France’s quote about how they were going to “crush the Americans” or something like that and how “that’s what we’re here for.” And then to not only beat them, but to beat them like that? I regret not watching it live, but I’m glad I watched it at all so that I could read this post and know exactly what you are talking about.
This *has* to win an ESPY next year.
