Tribe on the Offensive
August 12, 2008Headscratcher of the Day…
August 12, 2008Because I can’t help it. All too often with this Browns team has an injury started out minor and then lasted a tad longer than expected. So, with all of this talk regarding the stitches in the foot of All-Pro, 16-touchdown receiver Braylon Edwards, I cannot help but think the worst. Not to mention, it wasn’t even during a football-related task. Edwards and Donte Stallworth were playing around – or “horsing,” as a certain generation would prefer to call it.
But during a recent interview with HC Romeo Crennel, it sounds like the RAC is willing to turn the other cheek on said funny business.
“Kids are kids,” Crennel said. “You look at kids, they take their shoes off and run around all the time. Maybe his feet were hurting that day. We’ll educate him a little bit more and tell him about keeping his shoes on till he gets inside. We don’t like things to happen, but they happen. What can you do other than try to educate them?”
Crennel then stated that he would not worry if Braylon were to miss the rest of the preseason. But I’m willing to bet that a few fans in this general area would be a tad on the worried side. What are the odds of B.E. missing the remainder of the preseason? The OBR breaks it down:
The source said “it’s a virtual certainty” that Edwards will miss this coming Monday’s game against the Giants and “there’s a pretty good chance” he’ll be held out of the Lions game five days later. There’s an outside chance he could miss the final pre-season game on Aug. 28 against the Bears, but, the source said, “almost no chance he’ll miss the season opener” against the Cowboys in early September.
“It would take a serious, unexpected setback for him to be unavailable for the Cowboys game,” an additional source added.
But in a Lloyd Christams fashion, they’re “saying there’s a chance.”
But back to the first quote. “Kids are kids.” Really? At what point is one no longer a “kid?” To me, it’s the second he signs that dotted line and hauls in a huge signing bonus. That kid has a responsibility to a franchise that is investing large amounts of money in his future. Another question I have is, what if this was someone like Paul Hubbard? Considerably younger, not as high profile. What would Crennel have to say then? Obviously, Crennel is going to be a bit more lenient on his All-Pro, but could you see Eric Wedge saying something like this? And yes, I’m aware that I’ve chastised Wedge on this site before – but more for his in-game lack of tactics. He’s one of the best in terms of managing his players outside of the game.
And on this “we’ll educate him a little bit more.” Did they not have shoe requirements at the University of Michigan? I know that fundraisers for children are not that important any longer, but I would assume that proper attire would be something that is tended to. But what do I know?
Answer: That I cannot wait for #17 to suit up again. I know that the fourth preseason game is not exactly a starters showcase, but a few reps wouldn’t hurt. If Edwards isn’t cleared for that last preseason game, you’ll have one concerned blogger.

I’d rather he play as little as possible in the preseason anyways. He doesn’t need it, and he will be able to come in Week 1 100% prepared regardless. Same goes for guys like Winslow and Jamal.
I agree with you Scott. That mentality blows me away. Braylon has been out of college for what, 4 years counting this one? Which makes him 25ish? He shouldnt be considered a ‘kid’ anymore and certainly shouldnt be making a mistake like this.
Stiches take longer than 3 weeks to heal dont they?
Braylon is 8 months and 19 days younger than me, and I hardly consider myself a “kid” anymore. Neither do the people I work with. Nor do my friends, parents, acquaintences and colleagues brush off any stupid antics with “meh, he’s a kid”
RAC is
lying‘downplaying the situation’ because it happened between Edwards and Stallworth, and it happened in the preseason.Personally, I’d expect a bit more for $8MM a year.
im sure RAC gave both of them an earful in private. it seems like the kind of thing that doesnt need to get overblown in the media, but i would bet they got torn a new one in private.
I agree with Mike’s comment. I am also okay with BE missing all of preseason if it means a healthy start to the regular season
Rest him b easy and focus on finding that #3 wideout with wilson, steptoe cribbs, and hubbard.
insert staph infection joke here?
boys will be boys 🙂

[…] It doesn’t sound like a serious injury, and certainly there is plenty of time for Braylon to heal. But it doesn’t surprise us that the Browns would be interested in keeping this injury quiet. Fans may not be too excited to hear that Braylon was hurt playing around again. […]
