LeBron James to Play Thursday
July 30, 2008Lee, Lead Squandered
July 31, 2008Ricky Davis is a man of many traits. He’s a man of many quirks. And now he’s a man of many teams, signing with the Los Angeles Clippers for two-year deal. Oddly enough, there is an opt-out clause after next summer which shows that neither party is exactly sure how things will work out. But can you blame them?
There is no doubting the abilities of Davis. Always been able to score, Davis’ career year came back in 2002-2003 when he led the Cavaliers to a whopping 17 wins. Not only would this be his final full season in the league, being traded to Boston in 2003, it also signaled the end of then head coach John Lucas. It also was the only time in recent history that a man tried to get a triple-double by shooting at his own hoop only to get the rebound.
Perhaps we have Davis to thank? This dreadful bout of losing is what landed us the first overall selection back in 2003. You know, the one that landed us LeBron James?
While the Clippers will be able to use the scoring abilities of R.D., it may not necessarily translate to wins. Take a quick look at Davis’ wins and losses throughout his career, starting with Cleveland:
2001 (CLE): 29-53
2002 (CLE): 17-65
2003 (CLE): 35-47
2003 (BOS): 36-46
2004 (BOS): 45-37
2005 (BOS): 33-49
2005 (MIN): 33-49
2006 (MIN): 32-50
2007 (MIA): 15-67
You’re looking at an average of about 29 wins per year. Twenty-nine. One winning season. Now, I’m not saying that this is all directly related to Davis, but the year he was traded to Boston mid-season, they won their division. Next year? Thirty-three wins.
If you’re a fan of the Clippers, I have to assume that any excitement you had when your team signed Baron Davis and Marcus Camby has been tapered a bit with this addition. There’s a reason that Davis is now with his sixth team in 10 seasons, and while I do not know him personally, I’m willing to bet thta it isn’t due to his leadership.

as the cavalier over at yaysports put it, “Ricky Davis is now an LA Clipper, finishing at last his 8 or 9 year journey to his true destiny”
Exactly Buu…
It could really end no other way.
I will always have one fond memory of him in a Cavs uni, though, which was the monstrous dunk on Steve Nash that ended with TV cameras catching an emphatic “Oh, SH*T!!” yelled Nash’s way by R.D..
That one three-second interval of his Cavs career was, in fact, pretty sweet.

I covered this in march with complete statistical analysis. Ricky Davis is a phenomenon. Look what he did to the Miami Heat last season.

@buu: The Cavalier still blogs? 😉
I was at the game and the dunk was right in front of me. Amazing dunk.
This dunk when he was a member of the Celtics is HILARIOUS.

A Ricky Davis cable TV channel would do very well, I think.
I know we got rid of the guy once, but even adding Ricky Davis could be looked at as an attemp to imporve. I’m mean damn the Grizzlies gave up Pau Gasol for a couple of jock straps and the Rockets got Ron Artest for a bag of cheetos. What the hell is Danny ferry doing with these expiring contracts besides playing with himself?
