More Matt Holliday Talks
June 2, 2008Madden 09 Rankings: Cleveland Browns
June 2, 2008The Denver Broncos released RB Travis Henry…
The man who gets more love on Father’s Day than any other player in the NFL is without a team. The Broncos decided that Travis Henry wasn’t as committed to the team as he should be. You could understand the distraction I guess, the man has 9 kids. All by different woman no less. That’s a lot to keep up with…
“Although Travis has the ability to be one of the top running backs in the NFL, we have to make decisions that are in the best interests of our organization and its goal of winning a Super Bowl,” Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement. “We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team.”
That doesn’t exactly sound like a ringing endorsement of the man’s work ethic. But let’s take a look at the potential for a moment. Last season, Henry’s first in Denver, he averaged just a hair under 100 yards per game until nagging injuries and a little drug suspension kept him off the field. In fact, for the first five games Henry averaged 4.8 yards per carry.
Behind Jamal Lewis, the Browns have Jerome Harrison and Jason Wright. The two have 7 combined years of NFL experience and 705 yards. Depth was a concern last season, as Lewis has struggled throughout his career to stay healthy, and it should still be a concern even though Lewis managed to play virtually the whole season.
Now, whether Henry is the right man for the job is certainly a question. According to Hashmarks, Henry stopped participating in OTA’s, and hasn’t been very happy with the possibility of sharing time with youngster Selvin Young, and the recently acquired Michael Pittman. (How were we not in the Pittman sweeps?) Stands to reason that Henry wouldn’t want to be stuck behind Lewis all season, but not having a job sometimes motivates a person to see things a little differently.
So the question remains, is Travis Henry worth a look?

No thanks. One good season in the last 4 years, issues off the field, drug suspensions. Scared of competition. I’ll pass.
I know he isn’t very experienced, but I really like Jerome Harrison. He showed last year that he can be a capable 3rd down back at the least, although Crennel never really played him and instead opted for Jason Wright. But I think Harrison is very good at catching it out of the backfield and if Lewis were to go down, I would actually be pretty confident in Harrison’s ability to gain yards
I’ll pass as well. Likely not worth the money – seems like he’d be a problem off of the field.
The Browns seem like they’re starting to develop a Patriots-esque “team is bigger than player” attitude, and I’m not sure this guy would fit into that. Great talent, but no thanks.
This is a player Butch would’ve taken a look at (I liked Butch). Savage won’t touch him with a ten foot pole though. I would agree we need some depth at halfback considering Jamal’s injury history and that he’s hitting 30. I wouldn’t be mad if we went into the season with J Wright and Harrison as our 2 and 3 backs.
Id pass on the Henry train. Looks like a good candidate for the Raiders.
But I do wonder about this comment….
(How were we not in the Pittman sweeps?)
I think Pittman would be a perfect backup and was upset when he was signed and we didnt hear anything…
