And if it’s like riding a bike, it often seems that our current lineup would rather ride on the pegs. Some things never change, and while Omar Vizquel received one of the better ovations for an opposing player over the last few years, it didn’t take long to see what we’ve been missing.
Terry Pluto pointed out this morning, and I can’t disagree, that this team has struggled to find a consistent batter in the two-hole. We had hoped that Asdrubal Caberera would have been the answer this season – and while he still may be, eventually – it has been a revolving door ever since the injury bug came through town.
Fans in attendance of last night’s game saw one of the better pitcher duals over the last few weeks. Jonathan Sanchez tossed eight strikeouts, allowing one run over seven and two-thirds. Aaron Laffey was there inning for inning, allowing one run as well through six and two-thirds; but instead of strikeouts, Laffey opted for the ground ball by notching 12 groundouts.
The runs that the Giants put up in the eighth may as well have been handed to them with the Indians tossing the ball all over the field like rec-leaguers. Casey Blake’s fielding of the abovementioned bunt didn’t help matters much, though that run was scoring regardless.
“There’s not too many guys who can get that one down like that and give it some direction, too,” [Eric] Wedge said. “Omar’s pretty good at that.”
It must be nice to have a shortstop that can bunt (let alone hit) in clutch situations like that. I almost forgot what that looked like.

I was there last night, and you could feel that squeeze coming from a mile away. Pitchout Wedgie? (The count was 0-1 at the time)
Also, Marte looked surprisingly good at 3B on at least a couple of plays last night; better than Blake on the squeeze for sure. When I said this to my buddy, the guy in the row in front of us almost punched me, claiming Casey Blake is the only reason this team has won any games this year. Wow. I got called out by a creepy guy with Casey Blake crush.
Why did Shoppach throw on the stolen base attempt in the eighth that wound up bouncing into centerfield allowing the go ahead run to score? I still can’t figure that out. Don’t you just let the guy have the base as to erase any chance of an error occurring?
MoBot – that’s typically a coaches call before a pitch. It takes a coach, first.
