April 3, 2008Picks Of The Week – April 2, 2008
After some time away, Matt decided it was time for another GAMBLOG session. Sometimes life gets in the way and writing gets tough. And then other times, you feel so good about pick that you just have to share it with the world (or, whoever happens to read WFNY). With the latter being the case, we are pleased to bring back the GAMBLOG. As always, be careful with how you use this information. We’re all about fun and games, not serious gambling. Right?

I disagree with you about Kosta. I don’t think he’s going anywhere, and if he does declare for the draft (bad move) he certainly wouldn’t be on the Heat’s radar. They would have to have some crazy bad luck to fall that far in the lottery.
I don’t follow OSU basketball (I go to Indiana, don’t really have much choice), but from what I have seen of Kosta Koufos, he is nowhere near ready for the NBA and probably would not be a lottery pick. He would be a fool to leave early. He did not play all that great for most of season; he can’t play man-to-man defense (which is why OSU played zone all year) and his shooting was inconsistent. He let DJ White dominate and out-physical him. So I hope you were joking when you said this will be his last game as a Buckeye, because for his sake I hope it is not.
People who know Koufos are saying he has every intention of testing the draft waters, and if he’ll be a first round pick, he’s gone. Here’s one mock draft that has him going in the first round: http://www.mynbadraft.com/2008-NBA-Mock-Draft
And as far as it being a bad move, I guess that depends on how you’re looking at it. If he has another year like this year, he’ll NEVER go in the first round. So if he feels that he’s not going to get much better, he should absolutely go pro if someone’s going to take him in the first round.
Remember, he considered playing in Greece for money this year to avoid college, so it’s not like he’s dying to keep playing amateur basketball. The dude wants to get paid.
If he actually believes in his mind that he is not going to get any better, then he has worse problems then not being a lottery pick.
That mock draft was weak though. Why would Seattle take Beasley? He is just a bigger version of Durant, a compliment to be sure, but they need better guards and not more forwards
One last thing, there is so much risk in declaring early for the draft if you only project to be a late first round pick, because if you slip at all you are into the 2nd round and not making any guaranteed money
Here is a mock draft that doesn’t even have him on the board. Probably not because he wouldn’t be draft but because they figure they shouldn’t waste their time putting someone in the 2nd round if they don’t think he has any realistic chance of leaving.

Well, not to get into a whole thing here, but ideally Durant will not be a post player. Beasley would be a great addition to that team as a frontcourt presence.
Anyway, the NBA drafts on potential, not skill, anyway. I mean, remember Marvin Williams? Or better yet, how about Daequan Cook? The fact of the matter is that Kosta Koufos is a seven footer with agility who can face up and shoot from distance or post up with a decent hook shot. He’s got a chance to go pro, and he still might go pro in Greece. The chances of him coming back are 50/50 at best.
