Most Cursed Sports Town: Cleveland or Philadelphia?
March 27, 2008Ohio State Football: Volunteers On Deck…In 2018
March 27, 2008You may remember him for his insights into the Browns, or his cavalier attitude towards basketball (ok, that was really bad). Some of you will get to know him much better in the WFNY Fantasy Baseball League. (Hint- still room for a few players.) I’ve known him for a long time. We’ve built a roof for a family in Mexico together, toilet papered a youth minister’s house, and played together on maybe the worst softball team in America. He’s the original Jeremy…
1. Favorite sport to watch in person. Absolutely baseball. Nothing is better than going to a game on a hot summer night with a cold beer, a luke warm hotdog, and a bag of peanuts. But this is all without having seen soccer in person.
2. Favorite sport to watch on tv. Football is a lot of fun to watch on TV, lots of action, constant movement, plus all of the violence.
3. Sports or hobbies you play. Anymore? None. Haven’t been asked to play lately. I sub for a softball team and I’m looking for a soccer league.
4. Favorite Cleveland sports memory. I was at the Browns-Falcons game in ’02. When the Browns clinched the playoffs. It was about five degrees out, we had no shirts and the place was crazy. I’ve never heard anything so loud when William Green broke of a 70-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. That was a lot of fun.
5. Most heartbreaking loss. The 1997 World Series was a tough one. The Indians were so good that year. Nobody gave the Marlins a chance. I still won’t forgive Mesa or Fernandez for that one. Or the 1997 High School Div IV Football Championship. Manchester vs. Germantown Valley View. The mighty panthers fell in a five overtime classic. One of the best games I’ve ever seen, let alone played in, regardless of the level of competition.
6. Which team do you most want a title for. (Browns, Tribe, Cavs) Can I pick all three? I don’t know that I could decide between the Browns or Indians. I don’t really care about basketball that much, so that leaves the other two. But I can’t decide, either one would be great.
7. Your dream piece of Cleveland sports memorabilia. Game used Brook Jacoby jersey.
8. Favorite place to watch a game. Jacobs Field, as it will remain, is a great baseball stadium. PNC park in Pittsburgh is really nice though. But I have had the chance watch a game in Fenway Park, and as much as I hate all things Boston, it’s an incredible place to watch a game.
9. Any superstitions. My superstition was that I wasn’t going to have any superstitions. Weird. I know.
10. Your entrance music. Something funny, like, I Wear My Sunglasses at Night by Corey Hart. Nothing serious though. (You are such a jerk, you knew I’d youtube Corey Hart if you put it in here.)

Why Cleveland teams?
It’s funny, I never used to root for any Cleveland teams other than the Indians. As a kid, Walter Payton and Michael Jordan were all I wanted to watch in those respective sports, so I was a huge Bears and Bulls fan. My dad wanted to beat me for it. I did watch a lot of Browns though, my folks would have parties every Sunday for the Browns. I remember most of those games like I was there. But once the Browns left, I really realized what it was like to have a hometown team to root for. I couldn’t wait for the Browns to come back. I even remember watching the first game back against the Steelers with you Rick, although we got our clocks cleaned. Now, it’s all about pride, Cleveland doesn’t have much to look forward to other than our beloved sports teams. They give people hope. They might let them down too, but that never lasts, the hope and pride does. But it’s a great feeling to watch those games with your family and friends. I will watch those teams with my kids when the time comes. Regardless of where I live. I can’t wait.

Nice work. And that Browns/Falcons game is one of the more underappreciated games in Browns [recent] history!
You dad Should have beat you.
i was at that game too. buddy’s dad got us tix, 4th row right where willie green is looking towards. that was one of the best cleveland brown moments since they came back.
xavier is smokin’ WVU.
My most memorable game… The “Flag in the Eye Game”. NFL turned WWF in 3.2 seconds.
My “friends” most memorable game. Getting wasted in the Muni lot tailgating. In our One tailgating event of the year. I began the game screaming at everyone in the section before kickoff. Then pouring out 2 full beers so I could puke in the cups, pass out and not see one play.

Ran into semi hot/”stripper trashy” ex girlfriend I never hit in H.S. but always wanted too… looking for a ride to her car on the way out. er… She recognized me, and we had one of those weird silence moments… I’m not so sure I looked my best at that moment.
She sat on my lap on the way to her car. I didnt say a word because of the puke breath. That was the best I could do without embarrassing myself anymore. It was mildly enjoyable.
Haven’t seen her since but I hope Im in better shape the next time I do.
Xavier not so smoking… 🙁
couple comments: i also was at that browns/falcons game…ELECTRIC..that’s all about that
nice choice with the brook jacoby jersey. also nice to hear you also partially blame hernandez…too many people forget that error. been to pnc park, beautiful place. i liked that u said fenway. i saw the browns/packers game in lambeau a couple years ago. i can imagine, history wise, very similiar to fenway. great write-up again rick.
I caught an Indians game at Yankee Stadium once, Nagy pitched in a Tribe win. That was a cool place to have gone to. No interest in going back however.
This was fun to do. One day when I’m not poor I’d like to visit all the legendary stadiums, you know, Wrigley, Wembley, Dodger, Yankee, Brazil. But those days are not in my future anytime soon. I can always dream.
