January 29, 2008Browns Ink Coach To 2 Year Extension Through 2011
The Cleveland Browns have officially come to terms on a new contract extension for head coach Romeo Crennel. The 2 year extension, through 2011, is believed to be worth around $4 million per year.
Obviously, RAC is thrilled. According to his agent, Joe Linta,
“Romeo is very happy to have this done. Randy Lerner took the opportunity to make sure that Romeo Crennel is the face of the franchise for years to come and rewarded him for the fine job he’s done in helping to turn this franchise around. The ship is headed in the right direction and the Browns recognize Romeo’s value to the organization.”
I’m a big fan of conspiracy theories, and there’s one in particular that I predicted back when Phil Savage announced he would be trying to sign RAC to an extension. Back on January 9th, I wrote,
“I’m also going to go out on a limb and keep my Chudzinski theory alive as well. Crennel is currently under contract for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. I have a funny feeling the Browns will give Crennel a 2 year extension through 2011, which also happens to be the year Chudzinski’s recent extension runs out.”
Interesting. The extension is, indeed, through 2011. RAC also happens to be the oldest coach in the NFL at age 60. Now, 60 is obviously not terribly old for an NFL coach, nor is 64 – the age RAC will be when this extension expires. It just makes you wonder, though, in the wake of Coach Chud turning down interview requests, signing an extension with the Browns, and now the franchise has the contracts of these 2 coaches set to expire at the same time.
It’s obvious how highly everyone in the Browns front office think of Coach Chud, and as a person who grew up rooting for the Browns, you know the head job would be a dream for Coach Chud. Now, obviously, a LOT can happen in 4 years, and who knows where either of these guys, or even the Browns themselves, will be then and what the appropriate next step will be, but for now, I will continue to suspect that deep down the Browns eventually want Coach Chud to take over this team.

You’re not crazy Rock, I have the same sneaking suspicion.
I suppose the good news, too, is that should the Browns ever need to fire Crennel, they know they’ll have Chud right there to take his place.
